  • stimulate hair growth and provide shine;
  • saturate the hair with vitamins and nutrients;
  • moisturize dry scalp, helping to eliminate dandruff.

Composition of hair oils

“Pure” vegetable oils are a storehouse of fatty acid vitamins for hair nutrition, because due to their composition they have strengthening, moisturizing, smoothing, restoring, nourishing abilities.

For example, argan oil, extracted in the North-West of the African continent by pressing the fruits of the argan tree, is rightfully considered the most nutritious and healthy (rich in vitamins A and E and unsaturated fatty acids). Coconut oil strengthens the hair follicle, makes hair manageable and smooth, giving a dazzling shine.

Palmitic, oleic, linoleic and stearic acids, together with vitamins A, C and E, effectively moisturize the hair and prevent split ends. The most popular among Russian women, burdock oil, obtained from burdock roots, improves hair growth, vitamins A, E, B and C make hair strong, shiny, smooth and healthy.

How to use hair oil correctly

First of all, you need to understand whether you are using pure oil or cosmetic hair oil, which contains other components (silicone, alcohol, etc.). Pure oil should be used once a week.

Before shampooing as a deeply nourishing mask

  1. Heat the oil to 40 degrees.
  2. Apply to dry, messy hair.
  3. Rub into the roots, massaging the scalp and activating blood flow.
  4. Provide a "greenhouse" effect by covering your hair with plastic wrap or a cap.
  5. Leave on hair for at least 4 hours.
  6. Before washing off the oil, apply shampoo generously to the hair, spread over the entire surface of the hair, and only then add water to form a lather and rinse thoroughly with water.

Pure oil should be used once a week.

In other cases (before or after styling), it is not recommended to use pure hair oil - it will make the hair heavier, which will make it look untidy. And of course, it should not be used every time you wash your hair.

That is why manufacturers of cosmetic oils are constantly improving textures, adding light formulas that simultaneously fill in damaged areas of the hair, nourish without overloading their surface.

  • in their balanced composition (ingredients penetrate faster to the hair follicles, micro-oils nourish the hair);
  • additional thermal protection properties;

Before styling

Use the oil before flat ironing, tongs, or as a shine agent.

For dry hair

A few drops cosmetic oil, applied to the hair, will restore their shine, smooth the surface and discipline unruly hair. It is no coincidence that many manufacturers use aromatic oils as part of their products, so that in addition to tangible benefits, there is a luxurious aroma.

About the benefits natural oils for female beauty known from antiquity. Recipes with their use were described in the ancient Indian health treatise Ayurveda.

Examples of using oils to improve the condition of the skin and hair:

Hair Mask

For a mask, it is better to choose natural unrefined oils with a pleasant smell: olive, sesame or coconut. In linen, in spite of its beneficial features, a very specific smell, just like burdock. Apply the oil to clean, damp hair evenly from the roots to the ends of the hair. If the hair is oily at the roots and dry along the entire length, then oil should not be applied to the roots. After application, the hair should look like it is dirty, the oil should not drain from them. For better penetration into the scalp, you can do a massage. Then you need to cover your hair with cling film and cover your head in a towel. Wait 30 - 40 minutes, if the hair is in poor condition, with split ends, the mask can be left for an hour. After the time has elapsed, rinse your head well, the oil is usually not completely washed off at a time, so you will have to wash your hair 2-3 times. If the hair is normal or prone to oiliness, the mask is done once a week, damaged hair needs more nutrition to restore the mask can be done 2-3 times a week. After a while, the hair will become thick, silky, and regain its lost shine.

In the fight against dandruff, sweet almonds help: before washing, you need to apply a little oil on the scalp and rub it thoroughly, then just rinse it off as usual. Massage with this oil very well nourishes, moisturizes and strengthens the hair roots, gradually the hair stops splitting and falling out. People who are allergic to nuts should not use almond oil.

Skin beauty oil

Before the procedure, the skin should be clean and steamed, so it is recommended to do it after taking a bath or shower. It is also better to choose an oil with a pleasant smell. Coconut oil is ideal for both hair and body, but it is quite expensive, so it is easier and cheaper to use sesame oil - it has a pleasant sweetish nutty smell and can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. The procedure itself is very simple: a small amount of oil is rubbed into the skin of the body. The oil is poorly absorbed, so self-massage will help here: the oil will be absorbed faster, the whole body will relax, and the mood will improve. But self-massage should not hurt, it should be done gently and gently. The procedure is best done after an evening shower, before going to bed, when all worries are behind and you can relax. Good sleep is guaranteed.

You can rub the oil at least every day, it perfectly replaces body lotion. has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects, and over time, the skin is cleared of age-related pigmentation and acne, it becomes velvety, healthy and beautiful. It also protects against the harmful effects of sunlight, which is why it is often added to sun protection products.

Many women experience irritation and redness after shaving, especially in the bikini area. This is where tea tree oil can help. You need to mix it with any other oil in a ratio of 1:4 and apply twice a day to shaved areas. The redness and irritation will go away in a couple of days.

Natural and essential oils for hair growth are now actively used in the preparation of both factory cosmetic products and home remedies. With their help, it is possible not only to increase the length of the curls, but also to make the hair thicker, well-groomed, healthy. In this article, we will talk about the most popular hair oils and describe the main ways to use them.

How are essential oils different from base oils?

In order to avoid confusion in the future, you need to immediately decide on the basic terms and concepts. The phrase "natural oils" has several synonyms - "cosmetic", "base", "base oils". Natural oils are "extracted" from seeds, fruits and kernels of various plants: from pumpkin to shea tree. This is a complete, ready-to-use product that does not need to be mixed with other products. Unlike essential oils, base oils have a more oily texture and practically do not exude aroma. A strong smell is the main distinguishing feature of essential oils. They are highly concentrated. In most cases, it is forbidden to apply essential oil undiluted to the skin. High risk of burns. Therefore, esters must be used in doses and mixed with other means.

Essential oils owe their popularity in the perfumery, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries to the theremin and terpenoids included in their composition. These substances are known for their high biological activity. But natural oils are a storehouse of phospholipids, vitamins, macro- and microelements, phytosterols.

The so-called butters deserve special mention. In fact, these are natural oils, which are distinguished by a dense texture and resemble butter in appearance (with of English language"butter" is translated like this - " butter"). Their main advantage lies in the high concentration of saturated fatty acids. Among butters, coconut oil for hair growth, cocoa butter, shea butter are in special demand.

Natural and essential oils are often used together to enhance their positive effects. In this case, the base oils act as conductors that penetrate deep into the skin cells and deliver essential oils there. The double effect allows you to get a more powerful, noticeable result.

Useful properties of the most popular vegetable oils

The choice of a suitable product directly depends on the type of your hair and the beauty problems that you plan to deal with. Strengthening curls, treatment of split ends, elimination of dandruff, active growth of hair - for each purpose, you can choose your own oil.

However, before the first use, you need to check if you have an allergic reaction to a particular oil. The test is very simple: put some oil on your wrist. Do not rinse off the product within two hours. During this time, did you experience any discomfort, did your skin change color or start to itch? So, you can safely use the selected oil to perform cosmetic procedures. If an allergic reaction does occur, try to find an analogue that is safe for you.

  • The first place on our list is burdock oil. This is a universal product that allows you to effectively deal with various problems of curls and scalp. Many use burdock oil for hair growth. Its composition is rich in a whole scattering of valuable components: organic acids, vitamins, tannins. With the help of burdock oil, you can stabilize the production of sebum, get rid of dandruff, and strengthen hair follicles. Due to its ability to accelerate metabolic processes in the cells of the scalp this remedy provides enhanced growth of curls.
  • Owners of brittle, depleted hair with split ends should pay attention to nettle oil. Due to the high content of silicic acid and vitamins, this product perfectly strengthens the curls, making them more lively and strong.
  • Another universal "fighter" - Castor oil. It is used to nourish curls, activate dormant hair follicles. Castor oil is effective for hair growth, for adding shine to strands, and for eliminating dandruff. The main disadvantage of this tool is considered high viscosity. That is why it is so difficult to wash the oil out of the hair.
  • Almond oil is called a valuable source of vitamins B2, B3, F, E. It penetrates deep into the hair shaft and provides it with powerful nutrition. Procedures with almond oil can restore strength, silkiness, density to curls.
  • Does the condition of your hair leave much to be desired? The ends are split, the strands are tangled, and in general, does the hair look no better than an old washcloth? Sea buckthorn oil will come to the rescue. The retinol contained in it promotes the activation of hair follicles and cell regeneration. In addition, the tool has a wound healing and antibacterial effect. Using sea buckthorn oil for hair growth, you can simultaneously get rid of dandruff, restore the structure of curls, and return them to a well-groomed appearance.
  • Among the favorite beauty products of many fans natural remedies includes mustard oil. It is valued primarily for its warming and stimulating effect. Mustard oil for hair growth increases blood circulation in cells, which affects the rate of oxygen delivery and nutrients to the follicles. Also, this tool helps to neutralize the increased fat content of curls due to the normalization of the sebaceous glands.

When it comes to essential oils used to improve the quality and appearance hair, primarily emit oil of rosemary, orange, ylang-ylang, juniper, lavender, mint, chamomile, eucalyptus, fir, cinnamon, bergamot. It should be borne in mind that only natural esters have truly useful properties. Synthetic products can only give the final product a pleasant aroma. To check if you really have a natural essential oil, put a few drops on a piece of paper. If the agent evaporates quickly, and no residue remains on the sheet greasy spots, which means that it really has a natural origin.

How exactly can you use hair oils

We enrich the composition of care cosmetics. One of the most convenient methods of using oils is considered to be adding them to ready-made purchased cosmetic products: shampoos, balms, masks. A few drops are enough to enrich the composition of any product. However, you need to remember that oils or esters are added immediately before the procedure. That is, it is not necessary to pre-mix the oil with the contents of a bottle of shampoo or balm. In the process of long storage, the substance will lose its useful properties, as the oil will evaporate.

Enjoy aroma combing. This procedure will not only benefit curls, but also help you relax properly. Apply a couple of drops of ether to a wooden comb, divide your hair into strands and comb it carefully, slowly. Any essential oil is suitable for this procedure. Therefore, you can choose only by flavor.

Add more oils to your diet. It is no secret that regular consumption of natural oils, especially sunflower, olive, corn, and linseed, positively affects the condition of the hair. Doctors even recommend drinking one scoop of the product in the morning half an hour before breakfast. Natural oils make a delicious dressing for salads and some snacks.

Making homemade masks. Someone prefers to use only one oil as a mask, others add to base oils ethers, others like to mix several products at once in order to get the maximum result. To increase hair growth, the combination of “natural oil + pepper or pepper tincture” is excellent.

However, when using such masks, you need to be extremely careful. Otherwise, there is a danger of disturbing the natural balance of the skin. For preventive purposes, masks are used once every 7 days. If there is a specific problem and you want to get rid of it as soon as possible, reduce the frequency of repeating the procedures to 5 days.

A simple measure will help enhance the effect of the product: wrap the hair covered with a mask in plastic wrap or put on a special cap. Wrap everything on top with a towel. Thanks to the thermal effect, the active ingredients of the mask will penetrate deeper into the hair structure.

If your curls tend to be greasy and get dirty quickly, it's best to use oils with a lighter texture. An excellent option for you will be almond oil, coconut, jojoba.

Science in plain language. Do vegetable oils penetrate the hair, and which ones penetrate well. Which oils protect hair during washing, and which oils should be used to moisturize hair? We answer all questions :)

Do vegetable oils penetrate hair?

Perhaps the most common natural care for hair is the use of products based on vegetable oils- hot oils, oil serums and hair masks. But how do they work? Do oils penetrate hair, or is it a waste of time trying to moisturize and strengthen hair with vegetable oils? Let's figure it out.

But first, the main answer - vegetable oils really penetrate the hair and make it stronger. But not all oils.

How long does it take for the oil to penetrate the hair?

In scientific research, a method was used - a copy of the traditional Indian technology, which women use by applying coconut oil to their hair all night before washing their hair (Journal of Cosmetic Science). This overnight period of oil use is very important, as oil penetrates the hair much, much more slowly than water. It was found that for effective penetration of oil into the hair should take about 14 hours.

Water has a very small size and therefore can easily pass under the cuticle or even through it. Oils, on the other hand, need to twist and bend (maneuver) in order to slip under the hair cuticle. In this case, the oil does not completely penetrate the hair, it also covers the outer surface of the cuticle. The amount of oil that can penetrate the hair is limited so naturally most of the oil will remain on the surface (J Cosmet Sci, 52(3):169-84) .

Schematic process fig.

What oils penetrate the hair?

According to research, the best vegetable oil that can penetrate hair, is virgin coconut oil(unrefined). Olive oil and avocado oil also penetrate well into the hair - the cortex (Journal of Cosmetic Science, pg 299, 2005). Many other liquid oils and butters can also penetrate the hair, but no more research has been done (Journal of Cosmetic Science, pg 169-184). This assumption is that saturated and monounsaturated oils are more compact in size, and therefore can maneuver when trying to pass through the cuticle. Suggested oils include shea butter and even natural butter.

At the same time, oils containing polyunsaturated acids are larger in size, therefore, they cannot maneuver and easily pass through the layers of the cuticle, that is, they do not penetrate at all. it sunflower oil , jojoba, soy and corn oil.

Penetrating oils can sometimes be mixed- it is quite possible that the combination of coconut and olive oil can even penetrate the hair better than these oils alone (mixed micelles effect). Try starting with a 50/50 mixture and see how it works on your hair.

How can you remove already penetrated oil from the hair?

If you have used coconut oil or a similar penetrating oil for hair treatment and you are not happy with the result, how can you remove this oil from your hair? No studies have been found for such a case, but I can assume that the oil can be removed from the hair along the same path that it got there. If you want to get rid of oil that has entered your hair, simply stop using it and wash your hair with a shampoo (or even better, a more alkaline soap) that will dissolve the oil on the surface of the hair. The amount of oil penetrating the hair is quite small, and you will get rid of about 99% of the oil within 2-3 shampoos.

Penetrating or non-penetrating oils for hair care?

As I wrote above, vegetable oils are divided into penetrating hair and non-penetrating (covering) hair. For example, coconut oil penetrates into the hair, while other oils, such as sunflower, simply form a thin coating on the outside of the hair. When caring for their hair, many women choose penetrating oils as part of masks and hair wraps. But are penetrating oils really more effective? And what is actually better for hair?

Penetrating Oil Benefits

Penetrating oils are especially effective before and during hair washing.. Coconut oil is used on dry hair before washing (for a few hours, long enough for the coconut oil to penetrate the hair) and protects the hair from moisture penetration. This treatment helps to protect the hair, preventing damage during washing. In this case, the hair loses less proteins, the loss of which occurs due to the opening of the cuticle.

An analogy to this process is a regular hair tie - how many times can you stretch it before it eventually breaks? During washing, the hair absorbs and gives back water, which causes the cuticles to rise a little in different directions, and then fall back down. Repeat this procedure several times and eventually some cuticles will be broken. This effect is called "hydro-fatigue" of the hair (when the hair is permanently damaged due to daily washing), and penetrating oils such as coconut oil can prevent this type of damage. (Journal of Cosmetic Science, pg. 169-184, 2001).

Advantage of covering (i.e. non-penetrating) oils

When it comes to moisturizing the hair, oils that don't penetrate the hair are more effective. The oils that form a film on the hair create an effective barrier to prevent moisture loss. That is why coating oils such as jojoba, sunflower, which form a thin film on the hair, are much more effective as a "sealant" than coconut oil (Journal of Cosmetic Science, pg, pg135-145, 2007).

The penetrating oil naturally gets under the hair cuticle and does not create this barrier. Therefore, the oils that coat the hair as well as the natural barrier of sebum, are considered better moisturizers.

Brief Summary

  • Vegetable oils penetrate the hair, but this is a long process that takes up to 14 hours.
  • Vegetable oils do not completely penetrate, some still remains on the surface of the hair.
  • All oils are divided into types: very well penetrating, poorly penetrating, and non-penetrating (covering the hair).
  • Penetrating oils include coconut virgin, olive, avocado, possibly shea.
  • For poorly penetrating - oil limnantes alba.
  • For non-penetrating - jojoba, sunflower, soy, corn and possibly castor oil.
  • Penetrating oils are best used before washing the hair, they protect the hair from damage and make it stronger.

Jojoba oil is found in various products for hair, skin and nails, which indicates that the oil is indispensable in cosmetology. Although the beauty industry calls it an oil, jojoba is still a wax full of fatty acids, it is organically close to human skin. Once processed, jojoba oil is light and non-comedogenic, making it a popular choice for cosmetics and moisturizers.

Unrefined jojoba oil in liquid form has a clear golden color (at room temperature), with a hint of a nutty smell, while refined oil is colorless and odorless.

Jojoba oil is produced from a herb that grows in the middle of the desert (USA, Egypt, Israel, Mexico). Unlike many other vegetable oils such as grapeseed oil or coconut oil, jojoba oil has more long term storage because it contains less triglycerides. It also has an oxidation stability index of 60, making it more shelf stable than canola, sunflower, almond or macadamia oil. The fatty acid composition of jojoba oil tends to vary significantly depending on the soil and climatic conditions in which the plant is grown. Other factors, such as harvesting and processing methods, can also influence fatty acid composition.

Jojoba oil can be a great addition to your daily hair care routine. It really improves the condition of the hair from the roots to the tips, giving them strength, shine and manageability.

Three main properties of jojoba oil for hair

  1. Treatment for dry scalp.
  2. Stimulation of hair growth.
  3. Restoration of damaged hair.

The use of jojoba as a moisturizer for hair and skin is its main benefit, and recent dermatological studies have confirmed this. Recent patents also include it as a main ingredient in most shampoos and conditioners, claiming it is included as an important microemulsion in hair care products. Microemulsions help carry the active ingredients in the product. Other common microemulsions are beeswax, carnauba wax or esparto grass wax. Therefore, jojoba oil can really prevent hair breakage and strengthen it. It can also be helpful in treating dandruff, dry scalp and itching, and as an anti-inflammatory and skin moisturizer.

The reputation of the oil as a direct hair growth stimulant, on the other hand, is not supported by research, but if you add a few drops of peppermint essential oil (or other essential oil) to it, you can create excellent remedy to stimulate hair growth. For this reason, you should not rely solely on jojoba oil if you are experiencing heavy hair loss. However, it can be a great remedy for strengthening, silky and shiny hair.

What does jojoba oil do for hair, what are its benefits?

  • restores hair structures from the inside;
  • strengthens hair from roots to ends;
  • moisturizes hair and scalp;
  • treats dry and porous hair;
  • controls dandruff;
  • relieves psoriasis of the scalp;
  • controls hair loss;
  • improves hair growth in combination with essential oils;
  • the oil does not weigh down the hair and does not give them a greasy sheen;
  • oil nourishes the hair beneficial substances;
  • oil reduces the cross section of the hair, the tips look more dense and nourished;
  • protects hair from the sun, wind and temperature changes;
  • The oil is suitable for all hair types.

Ways to use jojoba oil for hair
