How to make a dress out of an old shirt. Do-it-yourself dress from a men's shirt. Dress from a shirt: how to do it yourself

Today it is very difficult to find a fashionable and original thing. Everything around is either banal or expensive. But to solve such a problem, you just need to give new life to old clothes. For example, you can make a dress from a men's shirt with your own hands. And for this you do not need to be a needlewoman. After all, even without a sewing machine, you can create a real masterpiece.

A simple dress from a man's shirt

Take a shirt or in another pattern. One-color thing is not worth taking. Button up half of her buttons.

Then you should put it on yourself, without putting your hands through the sleeves, so that the collar is at the back. Loose sleeves can be tied into a bow at the stomach. And you will get an absolutely original dress.

It will be a revealing dress with open shoulders. They can please your MCH. Then he will definitely not be offended that you took his shirt.

You can also make a dress from a men's shirt more complete. For this you will need:

  • Cut off the sleeves from the shirt along the collar line;
  • Tuck the edges so that you get a kind of sleeveless jacket;
  • Sew the edges;
  • Insert the elastic into the waist area.

You can also remove the collar by making a cutout. And you can leave it. So you get a business dress that is suitable for walking.

Use a belt and any jewelry. With the proper approach, the former shirt will not be recognized.

Dress shirt

This is a more difficult option. It requires certain skills. You can learn it purely theoretically.

The sundress is created as follows:

  1. Shirt sleeves are cut off;
  2. The collar is removed;
  3. Straps are formed;
  4. A bodice is made from the sleeves;
  5. The straps are sewn to the bodice.

As a result, you get a real sundress that can be worn in the summer. Moreover, it will look more interesting than the purchased analogue.

Types of dresses

By varying the length of the shirt, you can create a floor-length or knee-length dress. Some needlewomen sew together many small shirts, making a dress with a luxurious skirt.

In most cases, these clothes are non-standard and individual. It belongs to the modern urban style.

A plaid shirt can become the basis for a home dress in which you will clean the apartment. A white shirt will create an option for walking in sunny weather.

Many guys find these dresses sexy and sophisticated. Analogues are created by numerous fashion designers. So, you can always not only save money, but also be in trend.

These are the raw materials for the creative shirt dress.

And here's what came out! Real designer things that only you will have. And this is not just a dress, this is a dress with a twist, in which you definitely will not meet a girl on the street with an outfit similar to yours. You will be the one and only.

By the way, the use of shirts will speed up the sewing process, because all the small details, such as sleeves and necks, are already ready! The picture shows details up close.

And an idea for a long sleeve home dress:

Dress in the power of BOHO from several shirts

Original - by DreamsAndSeams

And what! Frankly, at the very beginning of the description of this "customizing" I was pulled to write something playful, like "undressing your man" ... But I thought, is it necessary? So let's get straight to the point.
Nine shirts were used in the case, of which seven were men's. All the old shirts went into action - with stains, and shabby, and washed out - everyone found a place. Please note that the shirts are selected according to the pattern: cage, stripe, plain, and colors - blue, dark blue, all cold tones.

Operating procedure:

1. We select a shirt that will go to the main part of the shelf and back. The one that suits you, plus it has a well-preserved collar and clasp.

We customize it according to the figure, we form tucks at the waist.
2. Using the usual braid, we model the armhole.

We will have a summer dress - a sleeveless sundress. By the way, I have an interesting idea about cuffs, you will know it if you read to the end.

3. We model the side parts.

First we pin it, then we cut it out of a shirt of a different color.

When cutting parts, do not forget the seam allowances!

4. We sew the details of the top of the dress. We cut out and sew the facing of the armhole - in the same way - we apply one of the shirts to the armhole, mark the line, cut it out, sew it on. In this case (turning the detail is small) you can use the sleeves of one of the shirts.

5 We proceed to the bottom of the dress - the skirt. Here is such a trick. The shirts have a front closure with a placket that can be used…. like the slit of a skirt with a clasp!
To do this, we cut out wedges from the central part of the shirt, the narrowest part of which is the former neck of the shirt, the widest part is the hem of the shirt. The author took an old denim sundress as a basis and modeled the wedges of the shirt on the sundress.

With this “makar” we cut out wedges from five shirts. Do not forget to count the number of wedges and the width of the wedge in the narrowest part, taking into account the width of your own waist divided by the number of wedges (plus seam allowances!) As far as I remember the elementary cutting course, you need to add a couple more centimeters to the so-called “loose fit” - well, so that the dress does not sit “like on a drum” and does not restrict movement.

6. We sew all the wedges, sew the skirt to the top of the dress. That's not all!
There are three more shirts left, or parts of them. We will cut out the frill of the dress from them.

We sew in such a way that similar colors on the wedge of the skirt and on the frill do not “meet”.

7. The belt is another fastener from the shirt. Very comfortable, lots of buttons!
8. Voila!

It turns out very effectively if you combine different colors of shirts.

If you have an irresistible desire to update your wardrobe, but unfortunately, for some reason, you can’t go shopping in the near future, then you can try to get out of this situation in a rather interesting way. Old or unwanted items, such as your boyfriend's or husband's clothes, can help you with this. There are practically no difficulties with its alteration. Any seamstress, even a completely inexperienced one, will be able to sew a dress from a men's shirt with their own hands, having standard sewing skills. I was interested in this idea, but do not yet understand how to make a dress out of a shirt? Now we will tell you.

If you still decide to make a dress out of a men's shirt with your own hands, then the following tips from experienced craftsmen will definitely come in handy:

  • It is very important to correctly measure the parameters of your own figure. The same husband or boyfriend can help with this.
  • Handle the sewing machine and scissors as carefully as possible. Accurately observe all dimensions and seams.
  • Carefully cut out all the details of the future dress. Periodically check how clearly you are doing everything, whether you have made any mistakes.
  • If you don’t have an old fabric for making a pattern, it doesn’t matter, because you can make notes right on the dress. But, of course, the pattern will help make all measurements more accurate.
  • Make sure you choose a really sizeless shirt, because the larger it is, the more options you will have for transforming it.
  • If at some point you realize that you can’t do it on your own, then don’t try to start or continue work. This is an easy, at first glance, process, but it has many pitfalls and requires a lot of patience.

How to make a dress from a long sleeved shirt?

The main trend of this year is the transformation of men's shirts into women's dresses. Such models give the female image even more femininity, attractiveness, lightness, and at the same time a sense of freedom. Therefore, borrow a couple of unnecessary things from your friend. Here are some interesting ideas on how to make a dress out of a shirt with the simplest accessories and simple steps.

Idea 1

Sandals or cute shoes will complement your outfit in an incredible way. Properly selected shoes will emphasize your own style, playing the role of one of the most important details in the process of creating an attractive stylish look. Shoes are more suitable for women's dresses, which outwardly do not look too bulky and solemn. Open dresses are best complemented with open sandals with straps, while models with a neckline - pumps or closed sandals. It is also important that they match in color.

Important! The folds present on the shirt help to hide extra pounds, give the image a sexuality and sharpness.

Idea 2

It is enough just to gird a men's shirt with an original strap to get a sexy dress. This accessory will perfectly emphasize the waist, help to balance the lower and upper proportions. Just remember that wide belts give the figure extra volume.

Important! If you want to look slimmer, then give up horizontal lines. The wider, more contrasting the belt, the more quadratic the body will acquire.

Idea 3

If you wrap your sleeves in an original way, then your image will change radically. You can do this in different ways:

  • You can wrap the cuffs 4 times, lift them above the elbow in order to give the dress some kind of negligence:
  • To create an image with three-quarter sleeves that are fashionable today, it is enough to fold the cuffs inward three times. As a result, the sleeve will be shortened, visually it will become much narrower. Such forms look fresh, original, aristocratic.
  • It is not necessary to shorten the sleeves, you can leave them long, so that later you can wear such a shirt-dress with low-speed sandals, shoes or black leggings. If you do not like to expose your legs too much, then you can replace leggings with tight stylish jeans.

Important! You can add zest to this image with the help of various jewelry, hats or handbags.

Obviously, to get a beautiful and fashionable dress, it is not at all necessary to go to the atelier. Everything is much easier. You can use the simplest options for converting shirts into stylish, light dresses. It is enough to slightly modify the sleeves, sew on a couple of buttons, beads, add an elegant bright belt.

Dress shirt: pattern and description of tailoring

You will need:

  1. Shirt;
  2. Scissors;
  3. Threads;
  4. needles;
  5. Elastic;
  6. Sewing machine;
  7. Decorative elements (appliqués, beads, buttons, ribbons, etc.).

Instruction:

  • First of all, choose a suitable shirt, fasten it with all buttons and lay it out on a flat surface.
  • Using scissors, cut the shirt across at armpit level. When you cut, make sure that the cut is even, and the shirt does not move, otherwise your dress will turn out to be crooked and sloppy.
  • Take the bottom of the shirt - this will be the skirt of the future dress. Fold it over and sew the top edge so that you can insert the elastic. Insert pieces of elastic bands, about 5 cm each, in the armpits on both sides of the shirt. Gather and stitch the elastic bands in the drawstring so that they do not move from place.
  • From the sleeves of the shirt, make details for the bodice of the future dress. To do this, cut off the sleeves, cut off the seam along the length and cut off the cuff. Cut the workpiece in half along the fold line. As a result, you should get two parts that resemble a cone in shape. On the narrow part of the cones, make tucks to the middle of the parts and stitch them.
  • With the help of an overcast seam, process the edges of the bodice, bending them twice by 0.5 cm. Connect the parts by laying one on top of the other. Sew the bodice to the bottom of the dress. From the remaining shirt fabric, make straps and sew them to the dress. To do this, cut long strips about 2-3 cm wide, sew them along, turn them inside out and iron them. Give the straps the desired length and sew to the dress.
  • You can sew on one strap loop to wrap around your neck. In this case, you will get a wonderful beach sundress.
  • You can decorate the finished dress from the shirt as you wish. You can sew on some beautiful buttons or beads, sew on an appliqué, or make bows from a satin ribbon.

It's great when something new comes out of an old thing. An old shirt that has become small or frayed from frequent wear is unlikely to be suitable for sewing a thing for an adult out of it. But the dress for a little girl will come out just wonderful, and there are at least 15 examples of this. Even a not very experienced master will be able to cope with tailoring, because the most complex details, such as buttons and a collar, are already ready.

1. Dress from a shirt with a gathered neck

In this dress, you do not have to process the bottom edge. You just need to cut out the outline and sew on the neck and sleeves elastic band.

2. Dress without sleeves and collar

First, rip off the sleeves and collar. If you don't want to mess around for too long, you can simply cut them off with sharp scissors at the very seam.

Now you need to straighten the shirt in the neck area and iron it well. Pay special attention to the shoulder line.

The neck of the shirt may be wider than necessary for a little girl's dress. Therefore, sometimes you have to hide a couple of extra centimeters in the back seam.

If you want the collar to be higher, a yoke is sewn on top, which can be cut out of the sleeves.

The yoke is made up of two parts and is sewn to the bottom of the back of the dress.

And then lay the shoulder seams. Both versions of the dress look very good. Grab a few different shirts and work out!

3. Dress for a girl with an elastic band

First, choose a shirt that will go with the dress. For a dress for a very little girl, even the shirt of an older brother is suitable.

Now cut off the parts you don't need for this project: the sleeves and the top. If your shirt has a front pocket, carefully remove it with a seam ripper.

The sleeve must be cut in half. The top will be used for the dress. But, if the size allows, you can make sleeves from the part with cuffs.

Build a pattern on paper, a piece of wallpaper, or newspaper.

Attach the pattern to the shirt so that the fastener is in the middle.

Circle the outline of the pattern with a textile pen, a piece of chalk or a remnant of soap.

Cut out the outline of the dress in front and back, leaving 2.5 centimeters for the seams.

Now it's the turn of the sleeve. Both sleeves are cut out from the top.

Attach the sleeve to the shelf by folding them together with the right sides inward. Secure with sewing pins.

Sew the sleeve to the dress. You should end up with a diagonal seam. Do not forget to remove the pins in time.

When you turn the dress inside out, it should look like this.

Repeat all operations for the second sleeve.

Now you need to connect the sleeves to the back. The dress should look like this:

If possible, overlock all seams. An alternative can be a regular zigzag stitch or processing with special scissors. But you can just leave the edges raw. Little girls grow up so fast that the dress will never wear out!

The neck is also desirable to process.

If there is no overlock, fold the edge twice. Raw edge is not allowed at this point.

You will need to fold the edge over to form a drawstring for the elastic. To make sure there is enough space, attach a safety pin to the edge.

Now iron the drawstring. Before it is sewn on, the fabric may bulge. This is fine. When the elastic is threaded into the neck, the cut of the collar will be even.

Now secure the edge with pins. Sew the neckline, leaving a few centimeters unsewn, so that the elastic can be threaded through. In this place, pin the edge with a large number of pins.

Start sewing. From one pair of pins to another.

The seam should connect all the parts, including the clasp. The dress will not unbutton like a shirt.

Finish the edges of both sleeves.

Then sew the dress along the side seams.

Treat the sleeve in the same way as the neckline, and thread the elastic through it. If desired, you can leave the sleeve straight.

For elastic at the waist, you need to make a special lining. Measure the width of the dress and cut out the desired piece. You can take the fabric that was left from the shirt, or add a completely different lining. The lining will be sewn onto the front side of the dress.

Sew a rectangle from the lining fabric, turn it inside out and sew it to the dress.

Make several transverse seams into which the elastic will be threaded.

The dress is ready!

4. From a thick shirt, you can sew a dress with an original drapery

5. Hot pink shirts are made to be dressed up!

6. Sundress with a textile rose

This project is much easier than it looks! Cut off excess parts from the shirt, open the front pockets.

Sew up the shirt along the zipper line. If you want the sundress not to remind you of the piece of clothing from which it is cut, you can completely remove the fastener with buttons by connecting the edge with a simple seam.

Sew the side seams of the future sundress.

Finish the top edge and thread the elastic through.

From the shirt sleeve, cut out two identical rectangles that will become harnesses.

Sew on the harnesses so that they are aligned at the front.
