The “enemies” were made by cars passing along the highway, in the arsenal of the third graders there were toy machine guns firing plastic bullets. The game lasted for half an hour, until Belsky's off-road vehicle taxied onto the track.

Of course, shooting at cars is not good. And perhaps the boys should have pointed this out. But what happened next does not quite fit into the framework of an educational conversation.
